Volunteering

Interested in taking a peek behind the scenes of the festival? Now you can! As a volunteer, you will be an important part of the Helsinki City Festival and get to experience the event in a unique way.

As a volunteer, you will receive the following benefits at HCF:

  • Admission to the Helsinki City Festival
  • A staff shirt
  • A hot meal during your shift
  • Free coffee and tea in the staff area during your shift
  • A volunteer certificate

Volunteer tasks

There are a variety of volunteer tasks available. You do not need to have any prior experience, as you will be trained in each area and the tasks are supervised. All volunteers must be of legal age.

Wristband exchange and accreditation point

At this point, volunteers welcome employees, media representatives, or guests arriving at the festival, check their identity, and provide them with the correct festival pass. The task requires accuracy, basic IT skills, and a cheerful and friendly customer service attitude. The tasks take place during the week before the festival.

Cleaning

The cleaning team volunteers take care of the cleanliness of the festival and staff areas. Their tasks include refilling toilet paper and paper towels in the toilets, emptying trash cans, and clearing tables in the restaurant area and collecting empty glasses from the tables, i.e., clearing them. The work is relaxed and the tasks are carried out with a cheerful attitude. The tasks take place during the festival.

Festival building

The festival building tasks in the area require volunteers who are good with their hands. Please indicate on the application form if you have any experience or special skills that would be useful in the construction of the area. The tasks take place during the week before the festival.

Demolition of the festival area

After the festival, the area is bustling with activity as it is dismantled. Volunteers help carry, dismantle, and pack structures. The tasks take place after the festival.

Bar service

Bar service points are a key part of the festival area, and their functionality has a significant impact on visitor comfort. Bar service points offer festival guests the opportunity to enjoy refreshments and relax while enjoying the music.

Volunteers can work either in serving roles or as assistants, such as porters. In serving roles, you will be responsible for preparing various drinks and serving and selling alcoholic beverages to customers in a responsible manner. You will get to meet different customers and shine with your customer service skills! You will be working in a busy environment, which requires good stress management skills and the ability to adapt to rapidly changing situations.

We hope you have previous experience in serving drinks, but it is not essential. A positive, energetic, and customer-oriented attitude is what counts! We expect you to be proactive and able to quickly learn how to prepare different drinks and use the cash register smoothly.

As a bartender, your duties will include restocking the beverage inventory and refrigerators at the serving stations, as well as other assisting tasks, such as keeping the serving stations clean. The job requires good physical condition, agility, initiative, and the ability to work efficiently in a busy environment.

You will receive comprehensive training for both jobs from the person in charge.

The jobs are for the duration of the festival. You do not need a liquor license, but we consider it an advantage!

Cloakroom

During the festival, cloakroom staff take care of customers' coats, backpacks, and other belongings, and customers receive a cloakroom ticket. A payment terminal is used at the workstation. The work is carried out with a cheerful and friendly customer service attitude, allowing festival-goers to enjoy the festival with peace of mind, knowing that their belongings are safely stored in a supervised cloakroom.

Decorations

Volunteers helping with decorations will hang, tinker with, and arrange visual displays around the area. No special skills are required; diligence, a willingness to learn new things, and a cheerful attitude are enough. The tasks involve carving, erecting, stacking, and cutting wood and other recycled materials.

Festival info

Whatever festival visitors may be wondering about, the information desk has the answer! The information desk is an important place for festival visitors, so volunteers should be familiar with the area, including the locations of water points, stages, and first aid stations. Friendly and cheerful customer service plays an important role in creating a pleasant festival experience. The work tasks take place during the festival.

Action team (many tasks in the festival area and readiness to move from one point to another)

The volunteers in the action team are super-types who can adapt to different situations and act as assistants to other volunteer teams in various tasks during the festival. One moment, an action team member may be keeping the area tidy, and the next, they may be helping out at the cloakroom. Action team members quickly adapt to changing situations. The tasks take place during the festival.
